About the original
The Royal Oak was launched by Audemars Piguet at the Basel Fair in 1972, during the early years of the quartz crisis. Audemars Piguet's US collection page credits its design to Gérald Genta. The watch was a stainless steel sports model with an integrated bracelet, and the brand's own history notes that it was seen as breaking the codes of Haute Horlogerie at the time.
The design is defined by a tonneau-shaped case, an octagonal bezel with eight hexagonal screws, a guilloche "Tapisserie" dial, and an integrated bracelet, all in hand-finished stainless steel. A women's model followed in 1976, designed by Jacqueline Dimier. Audemars Piguet says the collection now comprises more than 500 references.
