About the original
The Fifty Fathoms appeared in 1953 and is often called the first modern diving watch. In the 1960s Blancpain supplied Fifty Fathoms models to the German navy through Barakuda, a company that sold technical diving equipment. Barakuda also sold a civilian model in Germany, with two-tone rectangular hour markers, white hands and a date at 3.
Blancpain reissued that watch in 2019 as the Fifty Fathoms Barakuda, limited to 500 pieces. It is a 40 mm steel watch rated to 300 m, with a tropic rubber strap like the original's. The Blancpain page marks it as sold out.
