About the original
The Explorer dates from 1953, the year of the Everest summit, and has been a 36 mm watch for most of its life. Rolex made the case 39 mm for about eleven years with the 214270, then returned to 36 mm with the 124270 in 2021, using the dateless Caliber 3230. In 2023 Rolex added the 40 mm 224270 alongside it.
The design is a plain glossy black dial with Arabic numerals at 3, 6 and 9, a fixed polished bezel and a time-only display with no date. The cases are Oystersteel with a 100 m water resistance rating, and both sizes use an Oyster bracelet with an Oysterlock clasp and Easylink extension.
