About the original
The Military Submariner, or MilSub, is the Submariner that Rolex supplied to the British Ministry of Defence. After a first batch of about 50 watches in the late 1950s on the reference 6538, the Ministry came back in 1971 and took delivery of roughly 1,100 to 1,200 watches by 1979 on references based on the 5513: the 5513, the double-stamped 5513/5517 and the 5517.
What sets it apart from the civilian 5513 is the sword-shaped hands with an arrow-tipped seconds hand, a bezel marked for the full 60 minutes, fixed lug bars for a nylon strap, and a small circled T on the dial for tritium. The case is 40 mm steel with a domed acrylic crystal, a 200 m rating and the Caliber 1520.
