About the original
The Sumo began as the SBDC031, launched in 2007 as a mid-range 200 m Seiko diver. Two theories for the name are its bulky case set against a 20 mm bracelet, and the 12 o'clock marker, which resembles a sumo wrestler's mawashi. It kept the same 45 mm case until 2018.
In 2019 Seiko introduced the SPB101J1 (black dial) and SPB103J1 (green dial). The case size is unchanged, but they have a sapphire crystal, the 6R35 movement with a 70-hour power reserve, and a new hour hand and bezel numerals. The SPB103J1 is listed here as the primary reference.
