About the original
The Mark XI is a pilot's watch that IWC made from 1948 into the early 1980s for the British armed forces. Each watch went through a 44-day accuracy test at temperatures from minus 5 to plus 46 degrees Celsius and in five positions. Besides the RAF, it was made for BOAC, the Royal Australian Air Force and other air forces, as well as for civilians.
The design is a plain, legible instrument watch: a black dial with white numerals and a triangle at 12, luminous steel hands and a white central seconds hand, in a 36 mm steel case. The movement, the manual-winding calibre 89, sits in a soft iron inner case that protects it against magnetic fields. IWC introduced the Mark XII in 1993 as the successor.
