About the original
The GMT-Master 1675 followed the original 6542 around 1959 and stayed in production until about 1980, making it the longest-running GMT-Master reference. The 6542 was a 38 mm watch with no crown guards and a Bakelite bezel. The 1675 added crown guards, grew to 40 mm and used an aluminium bezel insert. Rolex made the original GMT-Master for airline pilots who needed a second time zone.
The design is a steel Oyster case with a rotating 24-hour bezel, a fourth hand that tracks the second time zone, Mercedes-style hands, a black dial and a domed acrylic crystal. The movement is the Caliber 1575 (the earliest 1675s used the 1565). The current GMT-Master II has a ceramic bezel.
