About the original
The Submariner 5513 is the no-date Submariner that Rolex made from 1962 to about 1989. It was the non-chronometer sibling of the 5512 and became the Submariner that collectors think of as the plain, time-only version. Early watches had glossy gilt-text dials; matte black dials arrived in 1967, first with the depth rating written in metres first and later with feet first.
The design is a 40 mm steel case with crown guards, a rotating 60-minute bezel with an aluminium insert, a domed acrylic crystal and a black dial with white polygonal indices and Mercedes-style hands. It is rated to 200 m and uses the Caliber 1520 (the early watches used the 1530).
